Our story.
I started off wanting to be a writer.
I’d spend hours reading books or scribbling in notebooks in coffee shops around Dublin. But it was a stint in Berlin that really got me curious about coffee. I planned on writing a few short stories but ended up hanging out in coffee shops, tasting amazing single origins and trying all sorts of brewing methods. I came back with an empty notebook and a head full of ideas. Wouldn’t it be great to open my own place?
I DECIDED TO QUIT MY JOB THE DAY AFTER THE MARRIAGE EQUALITY REFERENDUM.
As we watched the results come in on that sunny Saturday in May, there was an incredible buzz in the air. It was an inspiring, emotional experience. Ireland was changing. Everything seemed possible. I’m going to open my own place, I said. This time I meant it.
Changing career was frightening and exhilarating.
I worked in coffee shops all over Dublin – including the mighty 3fe – to build up the skills and knowledge to open my own place. The learning curve was immense. I often wondered if I was up to it. But three years later, in December 2018, Copper + Straw opened in the beautiful seaside town of Bray.
OUR VISION IS SIMPLE.
Make it all about the coffee. That’s what we love. That’s what we’re good at. So that’s what we do.
