Music, although not immediately obvious, is an incredibly important design feature. We've all had the experience of being in a bar or restaurant, and the music, for whatever reason isn't to our liking. It might not ruin your experience, but it's noticeable for the wrong reasons.
We have some rules of thumb when it comes to choosing music; you don't have to love it but it shouldn't be irritating; too low and it's just more background noise, too loud and it's intrusive.
People's tastes in music are subjective, and often tribal, so it's futile to try to find something everyone will like. We decided long ago to play music that reflects who we are, that gives texture to how we see ourselves. It's an ongoing experiment. We don't walk a straight line when it comes to coffee and our music shouldn't either.
More often than not, what you hear in our shops are tracks we found down some Spotify rabbit hole. It always gives us a thrill when a customer pop their head behind the bar to ask (or pulls out their phone to Shazam) what's playing.
